The Fenix :: 03.16.05
Wednesday night shows are usually calm, boring with not
much of a turn out, and the bands are usually amateurish.
This Wednesday night was different. It had a definite Saturday
night vibe. The buzz was due to Turn to Fall's energetic
performance and enthusiastic turn out.
Turn to Fall's music is unique, blending heavy melodic sounds
capes with catchy, melodic bass lines and creative drum
beats and a driving rock energy which had the crowd moving.
At one point, the crowd of 50+ broke out into a spontaneous
chanting of the band's name. The singer reminded me of a
mix of Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters and Brandon Boyd of Incubus,
especially in their haunting song "Calibos".
Josh Brown, singer/guitarist deftly crooned the melodic
songs while at the same time playing majestically blazing
guitar parts. Taking the lead was Leif Rowberg. The youngest
of the bunch, his guitar playing possessed a level of skill
far beyond his years but still infused with the intensity
of youth. This kid can shred! Edwin S. Peters II rocked
the bass with an animated stage presence and is a site to
behold. Drummer Jeremy Maher sported a Rush concert T-Shirt
and definitely represented the influence of legendary drummer
Neil Peart well.
I expected to endure yet another boring weeknight show,
but instead was totally blown away by the talent and charisma
these guys displayed. This night was special, not just for
the audience, but for the band. This was only their first
show and have been playing together for only a month. If
you have a chance to catch the next Turn to Fall show, I
would highly recommend it. Getting to work the next day
was tough. But, after such a great show, it was well worth
it.
